One more day all on my own. One more day with him not caring. What a life I might have known. But he never saw me there!
- Eponine, "One Day More" Les Miserables Musical
Les Miserables is my favorite musical ever, and Eponine may be one my top 5 favorite fictional characters. Les Miz is the first musical I saw on Broadway, and I still remember vividly how I felt when I first saw it, the summer after 8th grade. The music, the plot, the characterization, the lyrics are unparallel. "On My Own" is one of the most memorable love songs in Broadway history. I cried a bucket towards the end of the show even though I barely understood the entire plot--I had to tackle the 1000-some page Les Miserables novel right after to really understand the whole story.
Eponine Thernardier is a fascinating character, and personally, I think she steals the show in Les Miz and is certainly more popular than Cosette. Her love for Marius is ultimately self-sacrificial as she first helps Marius to find his love Cosette upon his request. Marius only sees her as a friend and is unaware of her feeling for him. Later, Eponine delivers Marius' love letter to Cosette and eventually returns to the barricades only to take the bullet in order to save Marius' life and dies in his arms. In this portrait, I wanted to capture Eponine's feral, waifish nature as well as her vulnerability and loneliness. She's always watching Marius, even though he is lost in his own melancholy pining for Cosette. What is heartbreaking about her feelings is that she is very painfully aware that her feeling for Marius is unrequitted, as is well expressed by her words: "I love him but everyday I'm learning, all my life I've only been pretending! Without me his world would go on turning, a world that's full of happiness that I have never known!" (On My Own)
For this picture I painted everything from scratch on SAI and Photoshop. I just wanted to do a rough character sketch, but I ended up drawing Marius and a backdrop too. The picture is set in front of Jean Valjean's gates in Paris, after Eponine helps Marius find Cosette. Please see full view! Check out my blog entry on Les Miserables the Musical: [link]
"You know Monsieur Marius, I think I was a little bit in love with you."
So I finally got to see the movie, which was the first version of Les Mis that I ever saw. I understand why everyone is bawling at the end. So sad! Now I can finally enjoy this fan art. Eponine is such a strong character. "On My Own" was by far one of the best numbers in the whole musical. Taylor Swift actually auditioned for the part, and not that I have anything against her, but I'm glad that the part was awarded to Samantha Barks, who is pretty much as unknown as you can get for Hollywood standards.
I like the way that you made this drawing in "real-life" mode rather than anime style (since we're so used to your NT art). You've really captured her unrequited love.
Yay!!! I watched the movie when it came out and loved it. Though I still am partial to broadway. Yeah, I do find Taylor Swift to be adorable but she would not have done justice to the character of Eponine.
I love it! Eponine is my favourite character in the musical (I haven't read the book). I love the technique you've used. Aw, Marius looks so love-sick. Poor 'Ponine.
Your picture displays how well how those two feel and act. Ponnine was always one of my favorite characters. I really wished for her, she'd some better luck. Meg
