Happy 2009!
This is an older picture, one I did back in spring 2007. It is a more realistic style than my usual one and took a long time to color in Photoshop--did everything by scratch. I was inspired by my favorite ballet, Tchaicovsky's Swan Lake.
The story is of a maiden named Odette, who has been cursed by evil sorceror Von Rothbart to take form of a swan whenever day falls. She and fellow cursed swan maidens reside by Swan Lake, when one day Prince Siegfried chances upon the untransformed Odette and swears his love to her. Upon returning to his castle, the prince throws a ball, which Odette is invited to. However, Von Rothbart disguises his daughter Odile as Odette, and by mistake, Siegfried proposes to the disguised Odile. To his horror, he sees the real Odette, who realizing the curse can never be broken now, returns to the lake heartbroken. The prince follows after her and the two lovers jump off a cliff to escape the curse of the sorcerer.
I was lucky to see the American Ballet Theater production at Lincoln Center last summer and it was breathtakingly beautiful. This is absolutely my favorite ballet--the music, the story, the costume, everything is fantastical and heartwrenching.
Anyhow, those of you who are familiar with CLAMP will recognize the dualism in this story present in many of CLAMP's works especially in Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles. I think I make mention of the Swan Lake several times during my fanfic New Trials of Card Captor Sakura at [link]
